Friday

Typed this last friday after lunch break :D

It’s a Friday and am typing this after lunch… there is no work scheduled to do for today am just checking mails… listening to “Mouhname unnidam” song from Mozhi…. It looks so pleasant today..no worries on top of my mind… just relaxed… and wondering what am doing sitting here at my desk… ( I usually do that :P )

Just took a look at my desktop to see what I have accomplished.. how many times would I have taken a look to see at how my desktop looks…

To my left there is a big bisleri bottle… almost half empty… oops I am optimist I should rather say half full :P …then as usual the IP 2004 notrtel phone with extension 2838 displaying digital time 2:55 PM J and just behind it is this great chunk of machinery that helps me earn every month .. ya you got that right.. DELL pc with a USB drive stuck to it…. Looks like… vendam :-)

And then this 17” flat… lcd display… and to my right there is a nice samsonite monthly calendar with a caption “Life’s a Journey” and also with a super figure … ;-) and some yellow stickies on my white board.. with some project details and call center ticket details.. I also have some numbers written for emergency…what if I lose my mobile again.. I should atelast know whom to contact right… and then there is a big yellow smiley round gift… it smiles at me… it was gift from one sweet dumbo…over it there is a duster…should I call it duster.. cos we write with marker on white boards… alright.. some wipy thing and over it is a stapler.. and I guess that’s it…

It looks already very clean.. should I clean it again… :-) Thank god they don’t allow my mom inside the office….

“Solli mudikum oru sollin vattathil palar solli pona oru porul irukkum.. sollai kadantha.. pennin mouna kootukul pala kodi kodi porul kudi irukum…. Mouname… unnidum..hmmmm hmmm hmmmmmmm “

If I had been there ......

Sometimes feeling bad... not able to get into a foriegn country... and earn in dollars...visit places... share photographs.... but many times feeling good of being able to live in Chennai..be with parents... be with my doggy... be with the childrens at SMILE...

Many a times.. people ask me .. why didnt you try for a onsite oppurtunity......come on you must be earning in pounds and dollars.... even after hearing all that... i too feel... why didnt i try to work some where outside the home town and earn in dollars......but later then... i feel i did take up the right decision of stayin here... after all success is what we measure as a result of our decisions....

We grow... grow up as adults... and start earn in thousands... lakhs... which is all good... buy a car... buy a home.... get married....if you look at each and every moment that you could rejoice in your life... you will also find your parents... rejoicing twice about thier childrens prosperity.... there are no expectations from them....

they too worked hard... they earned for us in hundreds..thousands...took loans... for our education.... tried to save a little.... sacrificed most of their pleasures... and lived for us... and still living for us... now people who worked with me (22 out of 25) ... have happily flyed out to U.S (which is the only place in earth considered for living at least according to them
alright.. no offence meant... not all of them :)) .... happily go out to all possible tourist destinations....take photos.. and share that... not even knowing that we sitting here might be least intrested to see some unknown place in the earth with just 2 or 3 well known idiots posing in differnt directions... they come back .... they get married... they go back...
probably ask parents to come in a dependent VISA (Mind You! - You have been dependent on them for all your ages ... before you were actually earning and still dependent on them to grow up your kids..... a baby sitter in US actually cost more and you are not willing to pay for that.....)
They may not be able to withstand the cold or extreme weather.. they may be missing out thier own set of people with whom they have thier evening chats.... they may be missing thier daily visit to the nearby temple... but inspite of all that... they wanted to travel miles... just because... they want to be their children and grandchildren.. just for the comfort of being with thier own souls.... I have seen so many such souls in airport who wanted to live with thier children...they pack everything and also try to get accustomed to this new way of life... and come and stay with you for some time.....but all their heart will be longing to come back to India....

Once in a while.... may be your christmas vacation.... people come out to visit the home town... and the main intention may not be to see those dear ones.... but something which sounds different!!!! yes ... to investtt??? their hard earned dollars into some real estate property... and nothing else... get the formalities.. done... and here again... the parents are busy
the whole month before you arraive to finanlise on the place....

Nobody can refuse all these... maybe some are doing it.. and some wanted to do this... and some dont have the oppurtunity to do this... but almost... 60-70% of people are following this trend....

But for how long is the question... how many of us are content with what we earn... how many people who went to US are really thinking back to settle down here in India... how many of them are still struggling for a green card and citizenship... forget it.. it is not going to be my problem :-)

I am happy that I am with them... I am happy to see a new soap in the soap box every time i need a new one...all those little things that my mom does for me... I am happy to sip the bed coffee served with love every morning.... nobody need to tell me a good morning... all i need is that cuppa of coffee from my mom..... I am lucky enough to enjoy such little moments in life....I dont share my life with a canon 6 mega pixel camera ... i share it real... with them... do a vetti talk before going to bed... hug them everytime in mornign... make fun... laugh... i am proud that i dont have a third person as a driver.. when i take my parents out for any function...

I feel it is my responsibility to ensure that their dreams are realized and what they failed to see when they were young,it is my responsibility to ensure that they experience all those they should and feel that their life is complete.I will do my best to give the best possible attention to all their wishes. Just because they are old does not mean that they will have to give up everything and keep sacrificing for their grandchildren also. They have wishes, too.

There is no more asking to myself......If I had been there.....

P.S: Inspired by recent movie which I saw (Cinema Paradiso)
Salvatore (hero) stays in a village and he gets a invaluable freindship of Alfredo( a theatre projectionist)... with the advise from Alfredo... Salvatore leaves his home town.. and returns back after 30 years....

Salvatore ask his mom - Do you ever felt that you missed me?
Mom - No i dont... but i feel that only when I bolt the door in the night...
Salvatore - You never used to bolt the door those days..
Mom - I do (smiling)... those day when you come late from the theatre... i used to pretend that I am sleeping.... once you reach home... i silently go to the door and bolt it before i sleep....
but now after you have left from here.... and every night when i bolt the door... i used to feel that i am leaving some one out there.... far away...
Salvatore - silences for a moment.. with tears n eyes..

P.P.S - This post may not be true for all those who live abroad... so dont get offended if you are staying abroad...... because thoughts may vary... opinions differ... these are all just my point of view and after all its my blog :-) take it easy

Your children are not your children

Recently there has been lot of discussion going on about parenting.. and home schooling... education system... blah.. blah... blah....

whatever be it.. we must treat humans as humans.. and not an object of experimentation... the present generation fathers & mothers are giving too much of attention to thier kids.. and the kids are pampered a way more than they should actually deserve.. in a way it is not good for both the ends..

Here are somethings which i feel should be given attention when dealing with kids...

If you ask me.... how do i know all this... i am father of 400 children :P dont ask me how???

Punishment.... do we actually need these.... even as grown ups.. do we feel better or change for better if we are made to feel worse by getting punished... definitely i dont... i actually hold grudge or take revenge on someone who tries to punish me.. and dont go on the betterment path... As parents... teachers.. everyone must understand... giving punishments is no way going to help the children... rather it creates a distance.. and fear amongst them...

Pointing out.... never point out the name of children for any mistake ... dont relate the name with the activity..... just comment on whatever action which is not desirable at the moment... at the same time.. dont over generalise the mistake of the kids.. it is because of parents.. and teachers.. the children fall into a impression.. that "I am always like that :-( " i am saying it loud.. this is very very crucial ..... all of you who now say.. that " I always mess up" think back once... it must have been someone who dumped this into your mind...

Questioning... i watched this many times.. some parent ignore when something the child questions ... or parents getting annoyed if the child asks something repeatedly and when they dont have an exact answer.... this is somethign to do with the ability of a person to answer to kid and also the interest taken from the parental side.. alright.. why blame parents alone.. even the teachers for that matter...

if we dont know something.. we must admit that first to child... and also give assurance to see if they can also find something on it... :D i am sure it is fun.... have figured out so many things in life...

this way we encourage the " reason for thinking" ability in the kid... right from childhood... which is essential.. instead of going .. "that is the way it is"

Also if you know somethign.. dont just give a blunt answer.. rather ask the kid to research and let them find their own solutions... may be you tweak them to your response.. or god knows.. you accept their findings too...

Too often we give our children answers to remember rather than problems to solve.
--- Roger Lewin

Dont expect.... lastly.. dont expect the kid to meet your expectations... rather... if you are really concerned.. you go and meet thier expectations... this is beautifully expressed in one of the Kahllil Gibran poem..... each and every line in this poem has got so much of importance....

Here you go..

On Children
Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday

Final word... even though we read lot of books, articles... i re-iterate the first point.. treat them as children.. not an object of experimentation... or a successor of your thoughts... let them explore it thier own way....

Blame Game

Two things… after seeing the career aspirations?? of students who outshined the recent results made me write this postAll good scorers in Tenth standard would like to take computer science group in plus one
All good scorers in Twelfth standard would like purse Computer engineering and become a software engineer! So far we all are getting into a understanding that education is to get a job and job is to get money… and once we have money in life … we are stable… but just having to come through this stream … do we really stop with that… we want more and more… … be it money… or success in corporate ladder… pride… what if we are suddenly hit by something which we do not expect…. Are we ready to face it? We still encourage our next generation to follow the same path of what we did some few years before…. Almost all the farmers son during my batch are well settled in US/Bangalore wearing tag for XYZ Corporation. What about the future of those farmed/unfarmed lands? Who is going to takeover it for tomorrow?
Today education system is more of a job oriented manufacturing system, which only prepares students competent enough to be a part of the emerging IT industry. I dont see any encouragement for course like Agriculture.

I will list some course which are still available in many universities with very little admissions... but truly speaking do we have jobs for these coursesAnthropologyArcheologyHumanitieshow many of us encourage our kids for courses likeB.sc Agriculture, Tourism Management, Environmental Awareness, Social Workthe entire industry has to take its turn to see the change in the academia... till then we will have students rushing into the stream of engineering where they get a 5 digit salary as thier first pay, this will not stop and having said that are we prepared for life to face any of bitter experiences? Are we bothered about creating a peaceful society? We all earn for our living and what if there is financial crisis/war?

I am not being pesimisstic but how are we going to deal with a sudden change like this? How many of us still have the identity of our local communities from where we came from? How many of us are atleast proud to say that I am from this part of country rather than saying.. I visited Las Vegas.. I went to Chicago… do we really bothered to see a boom in eco-centrism rather than closely watching rise in the economy like BSE…. We need to understand few things… life is more than just computers… internet … life is beyond job… salary.. perks.... appraisals.. onsite opportunities… and education is not only a means to procure a job which gives all of the above… we are part of the nature… we all live as chain…. Slowly there is a something fading in human relations and the relation between man and the nature…. I know am wandering topics between.. Education system… preserving trees… emerging IT…. Humanity…. But I don’t see them as individual topics… anything and everything in the world are inter-related… There is no doubt that we will continue to have huge projects with challenging deadlines all at our desk .. but I really doubt if we would have people to care and support… water to drink and air to breathe if this kind of job oriented manufacturing (education) system continues…..

Helmet

Intha govermentku vera velaya kedayathaa...

Innailenthu helmet compulsoryaam... even kettan ithella.. oorula nallathu pannavendiyathu evalo irukku atha vitutu...

There are lot of disadvantages because of this compulsion... See let me list one by one

1. Guys may not be able to see the figure face who are riding scooty,tooty...
2. The concept of full speed bike romance is doomed if both guy & gal wears helmet :(
3. One person may not be able get a lift on the way to office or home. He/She has to carry a helment if they need a lift
4. Vayasana paati/thaatha paavam very difficult to wear helmet and sit at the back (see i am not only concerned about figures)
5. Aiyoo the main part, aunties dont look good with Saree and Helmet... chaa :(
6. Going triples is not possible because heads will collide if all 3 wear helmet and sit so close together

Other proven medical disadvantages
1. Thala kanam pudichavangaloda thala kanam innum eridum :D
2. Sotta thala will become more sotta thala, every time they wear and remove micham irukura moonu masurum pichikum
3. Neck pain will be caused (that neck/spine joint bone) if the helmet is heavy and the road is full of bumps.. (this atleast is true)

Innovations required

People wearing glasses should be easily wear helmet without removing glass, probably the wizer mirror should be available with various eye power so no need to wear glass

There should be a wiper in the wizer so that people dont have to manually wipe the wizer in case of rain

Helmets should have inbuilt headphones and a provision for connectiving the stereo RC jack, so that one doesnt have to wear head phones and then wear helmet (Caution: Do not listen to music when driving)

hmmm will update this post as and when people report more problems
